A baby died during childbirth late last year after medical staff at a Brooklyn hospital appeared to ignore worrying signs for several hours, a new report by state health investigators has found. Two weeks later, the same doctor involved in the infant’s death was also involved in the death of a mother who gave birth at the hospital, Woodhull Medical Center in Bedford-Stuyvesant, according to the report. The doctor, Ronald Daniel, 72, was fired in December after the mother’s death, his employer said. The doctor was not the first at Woodhull to be fired following a maternal death in recent years. And this is not the first time regulators have concluded that problems on the hospital’s labor and delivery floor led to a death.

A gunman shot a 17-year-old boy and a man in his 40s inside a moving subway car as it approached a station in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood during the evening rush hour on Tuesday, the police said. The shooting occurred just after 5:30 p.m. on a northbound C train as it pulled into the Ralph Avenue station, the police said. The 17-year-old sustained an injury to his right hand and was taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, the police said. The man was shot in the left ankle and was taken to Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, the police said. It was unclear whether the gunman, who fled the scene, and the victims knew one another.

By this metric, Baltimore was found to be the “dirtiest” city, with 42,295 complaints per 100,000 residents. If you’re moving to New York City and want to find the most popular rental neighborhoods, it makes sense to follow locals in the know. Recently, RentHop did just that by studying web traffic to New York City listings that originated from within the city. Two Queens neighborhoods and four Brooklyn neighborhoods showed increased popularity. Astoria, Queens, rose to the top from ninth place a year ago. Other drops in Manhattan included Greenwich Village and the West Village, ranked 10th and 11th, each dropping six spots from last year; and the Bowery area ranked 13th, falling seven spots.

On the eastern edge of Bedford-Stuyvesant — a Brooklyn neighborhood synonymous with hip-hop excellence — a tiny wellness center is tucked between a Pentecostal church and a real estate office. On certain nights, one could be excused for thinking this is a waiting room and not what it actually is: a battleground. Here, in this unassuming room, the Trap NY — one of several battle rap leagues based in New York City — hosts most of its events. But those tapped into today’s vibrant and multilayered battle rap ecosystem know that this modest gym is far more than a setting where wannabe rappers roast each other. Founded by Tyrell Reid, known as No Mercy, the Trap NY is a well-known institution where future stars of this culture are born.

Marion Gordon "Pat" Robertson was born March 22, 1930, in Lexington, Virginia, to Absalom Willis Robertson and Gladys Churchill Robertson. The Latest:About 10 percent of offers to New York City’s most elite public high schools went to Black and Latino students this year, education officials announced on Thursday, in a school system where they make up more than two-thirds of the student population overall. The numbers — which have remained stubbornly low for years — placed a fresh spotlight on racial and ethnic disparities in the nation’s largest school system. At Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, the most selective of the city’s so-called specialized schools, seven of the 762 offers made went to Black students, down from 11 last year and eight in 2021. Gaps at many of the other schools were also stark: Out of 287 offers made at Staten Island Technical High School, for example, two Black students were accepted — up from zero last year — along with seven Latino students. About 26,000 eighth graders took the test last fall, and just under 4,000 were offered seats.

Brooklyn-based cleantech company BlocPower is squarely positioned with a mission to fight climate change while solving social injustices, focusing on renewable energy, reduction of carbon pollution, and urban redevelopment in lower-income areas. BlocPower was founded in 2014 by Donnel Baird, the child of Guyanese immigrants, who drew on his experience growing up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn in an apartment without well-functioning heating and cooling systems. This retrofitting of older buildings can lead to major energy savings, 30% to 50%, and a reduction of at least 40% in greenhouse gas emissions, BlocPower says. In Buffalo, BlocPower inked a contract with utility National Fuel Gas Company to upgrade hybrid heating and cooling systems in 34 low-to-middle income residential and commercial buildings. It also sealed a deal with Fujitsu General America to bring a better-functioning automatic heating and cooling unit to the U.S.
